Cardiac Cries for Help

Not all heart attacks are obvious and quickly recognizable. In fact, most start slowly and subtly, which can result in waiting too long before enlisting assistance. For the sake of survival, whether it is yours or another’s, know the warning signs of a heart attack:

  • Chest discomfort: Mild pain or discomfort (pressure, squeezing, fullness) occurring in the center of the chest, which may last more than a few minutes or go away and return.

This is the most common symptom for both men and women.

  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body: Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the stomach, back*, neck or jaw*.
  • Shortness of breath*: Unusual shortness, with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs include nausea*, lightheadedness and breaking out in a cold sweat.

*These symptoms are more common in women.

If you are experiencing indications such as these, or if you witness another person suffering from these symptoms, call 9-1-1. Immediate action can save lives.
