Too much Halloween candy and treats got you spooked? Here are some tips and tricks for a healthy Halloween for all trick-or-treaters, party hosts, and stay-at-home crew.
The Trick-or-Treater
- Fill up First – A healthy meal before going trick-or-treating can help reduce the temptation to snack on candy while walking from house to house.
- Bag the Monster Bag – Steer clear of the pillowcase method and have your kid(s) use a smaller container to collect candy.
- Get Moving – Instead of driving house to house, walk! Set a goal of how many houses or streets you’ll visit. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle and a flashlight.
- Look Before You Eat – Check expiration dates and inspect candy before allowing kids to eat them.
The Party Host
- Play with Food – Serve healthy snacks dressed in a Halloween theme instead of candy bowls.
- Keep them on their feet – Include plenty of physical activities – zombie dance party, three-legged monster race, spider crawl, or pumpkin toss.
- Rethink the drink – Cut back on sugary drinks. Try a Halloween-themed punch with sparkling water and a splash of orange juice, and then garnish with orange slices and blackberries.
The Stay-At-Home Crew
- No Self-Service – Hand out treats to each trick-or-treater – one per child. If you have more than one item, ask them to choose which they prefer.
- Be that house – Start a new tradition and give healthier treats or non-edible items (i.e., Halloween stickers or spider rings).
