January is Walk Your Dog Month

The new year is not only a good time for your new health journey but also an excellent time for your pet to start one. A survey from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that 60% of cats and 56% of dogs were obese. One of the simplest ways to fight or decrease rates of obesity in our pets is by exercise. Here are five great reasons to participate in “Walk Your Dog” month!

Walking gets you and your dog moving and outside – Dogs build up a lot of energy during the day, especially when they are home alone and taking frequent naps. A walk outside not only gets out some of his energy, but it also gets you moving. And getting a walk outside provides you both with natural air helping you both feel more refreshed.

Mental stimulation – Much like humans, dogs need mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. A walk provides your pet with an array of sights and smells, and they will be happy and satisfied napping (on the couch) later.

Great bonding and training time – Taking your pet on a walk is a great bonding experience that also helps boost the trust between you both with training. Leash manners and obedience are big factors in having a positive relationship with your dog.

Less stressed dog – Exercise helps you sleep better and reduce stress, and the same goes for your pet. A daily walk lowers both of your stress levels and can help manage some of your pup’s bad behavior.

Healthier dog (and you!) –  A daily walk helps your dog’s heart pump giving him fresh oxygenated blood, lubricates his joints, speeds up his metabolism, and burns calories.
