Staying Motivated to Workout in the Winter

Do the cold winter months make it hard to complete your exercise workouts? You are not alone; even the most experienced athletes and dedicated exercise enthusiasts have difficulty carving out the time to exercise when it’s cold. One of the easiest ways to continue your exercise routine in the winter months is to remove as many obstacles as possible and make minor adjustments that make it easier to work out until the warmer months are back. Here are some tips to help you get motivated to stay active this winter.

Seek out an exercise partner or group  – Exercising with a partner or group provides social support and camaraderie and helps distract from the cold weather. Even if you are at home, try joining a live class on Zoom.

– Adjust the thermostat – If your schedule only allows for early workouts, program the thermostat in the morning to ensure a warm atmosphere for waking up. *Hint: Place your workout clothes next to the vent, so they are nice and warm when you put them on. *

– Get your exercise clothes ready the night before  – This simple task sets you up on the right path without much effort; also, getting into your exercise clothes can energize and set you up mentally to work out.

Make it a goal to just get to the gym  – Focus on the first (and sometimes hardest) step, getting dressed and showing up to your workout space or gym.

Exercise during your lunch break – Exercise in the middle of the day, during peak light hours, and if the weather is tolerable, take a walk or jog outside (it also provides an added benefit of fresh air and nature).

– Focus on both the mental and physical benefits – The benefits of exercise for your mental and physical health are well known, especially during the winter months. People who focus on getting their workout in (even if it is a short HIIT workout) feel better overall, less stressed, and more relaxed.
