Weight Training Can Help Ease Anxiety

It’s well known that aerobic exercise not only improves mental illness symptoms and depression, but it has also been shown to elevate contentment and happiness. Did you know resistance training may also have the same effect? Scientists have started a series of newer studies that shows specifically how resistance or weight training can help alleviate anxiety and mental illness.

How to get started:

  • Start including weights during your regular exercise program. If you do not have weights at home, bodyweight exercises or utilizing resistance bands can be just as effective. Some exercises can include squats, lunges, pushups, pull-ups, and planks.
  • Household items such as canned goods, a gallon of water, or a sack of potatoes can be used as weight alternatives. Throw a few items in a backpack and do some squats! There are plenty of creative ways to incorporate household items into your regular exercise routine!
