Hibernating this winter isn’t going to burn you any calories. And now that oversized sweaters are in style this season, fashion makes it very easy to hide those extra holiday pounds. Don’t be afraid of the scale this New Year and winter-proof your workout with these tips:

Get Walking

If you’re new to outdoor activity in winter, walking is a good way to begin. It’s an effective cardiovascular workout that suits a range of fitness levels. Warm up by doing some simple stretches and by walking at a slower pace for the first 5 to 10 minutes of your walking routine. Additionally, be sure to dress for the weather!

Head for the Hills

Winter is the perfect time for outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and other snow-based activities, if you live in the right climate. Many ski resorts offer lessons for beginners and rental equipment. If you don’t live in snowy areas, make it a weekend trip with friends or family!

Indoor Activities at the Gym

Use the season as an excuse to expand your exercise routine and check out new fitness classes offered in your area. If you have wanted to try a new activity at your gym, stop stalling and sign up. Now is the perfect time to challenge yourself, whether you’re interested in spinning, kickboxing, or Zumba, are looking forward to swimming in the heated pool or walking on the treadmill. Who knows – your new activity may even turn into your favorite winter exercise.

Indoor Workouts at Home

Be prepared with an indoor workout when the weather conditions keep you stuck at home. Don’t have a fitness DVD? Look for a fitness channel on your local cable or satellite television, or find a fitness website you like and get a workout online. YouTube also offers a ton of great workout videos.
