BaySport Celebrates National Cholesterol Month

September is National Cholesterol Education Month! BaySport is celebrating with the NIH to provide important information about cholesterol and five ways BaySport supports Cholesterol Month!

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance occurring naturally in all body parts. Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly. But if you have too much in your blood, it can stick to the walls of your arteries. This is called plaque. Plaque can narrow your arteries or even block them.

High cholesterol levels in the blood can increase your risk of heart disease. Your cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older. There are usually no signs or symptoms of high blood cholesterol; however, it can be detected with a blood test. The most common risk factors for high cholesterol include: lack of exercise, a BMI of 30 or greater, tobacco & alcohol use, and family history of heart disease.

Monitoring cholesterol levels early in life is recommended. If any of the risk factors above apply to you, speak to a doctor about developing a plan to prevent high cholesterol. Effective ways to manage cholesterol levels at home include:

  • Increase daily exercise

  • Weight loss, if considered overweight or obese

  • Stay adequately hydrated

  • Adopt a healthy, well-balanced diet

  • Cut out tobacco products.
