Mindful Eating: Enjoy Your Food & Eat With Intention

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, many tend not to pay too much attention to how we eat. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture studies, Americans spend 2.5 hours a day eating. But more than half the time, they do something while eating – watching TV, on their phone/laptop, working, or driving.

Mindfulness does not only relate to yoga or meditation; it can be applied to many other things – like eating. Mindfulness is the act of focusing on the present moment while paying attention and accepting your feelings, thoughts, and sensations in your body. Below are some practices that can help you enjoy your food more and eat with intention.

Think about if you are eating due to hunger or emotions.

Appreciate the time, energy, and resources that went into your meal.

– Eat Slowly. Chew multiple times and put down your fork in between bites.

End your meal when you feel satisfied, not stuffed. This might not always mean a spotless plate.

– Take the Time to enjoy the flavors of your meal.

While it may take some getting used to, mindful eating can reduce stress and anxiety and even help you make healthier food choices over time.
