Press Release: BaySport Health Screening More Important Than Ever in the Era of COVID-19

LOS GATOS, CA, June 1, 2020 – As the coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt our daily lives, recent studies of individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 clearly demonstrate that underlying health conditions play a role in your individual risk. These underlying conditions, referred to as co-morbidities, include hypertension, diabetes, obesity (BMI >=30; approximately 25 or more pounds above recommended weight), coronary artery disease and asthma.  National public health experts have echoed similar concerns— COVID-19 patients with ANY comorbidity suffer poorer clinical outcomes than those individuals without.

To illustrate, researchers in New York City reviewed records of 5700 individuals hospitalized for COVID-19 (in March-April 2020) and found that 94% had at least one (1) comorbidity and 88% had two (2) or more. In this group, the most common were hypertension (53%), obesity (BMI >= 30) (42%) and diabetes (33%). Closer to home in Santa Clara County, of the 140 fatalities reported (as of May 29, 2020), hypertension, diabetes, coronary disease, and obesity were the most frequent comorbidities.  It is quite clear that underlying health issues do increase your individual risk for COVID-19 hospitalization or worse.

Now that Shelter-In Place orders are loosening and businesses are re-opening their doors, the evaluation of individual health status is as important as ever.  At BaySport, our health screening program continues to be the right starting point to help participants embark on positive healthy behaviors, as well as providing a “keep up the good work” incentive to those already including regular physical activity, good quality sleep, weight loss/maintenance, healthy food options, portion control and emotional health practices into their lifestyle.

BaySport’s health screening team performs approximately 15,000 worksite-based evaluations annually. The typical program includes a finger stick blood test (cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and hemoglobin A1c), blood pressure, height/weight/BMI, and a follow-up consultation to review results and develop specific health improvement recommendations.

The BaySport response to keeping our staff and our clients safe during our health screening programs includes:

* Daily temperature checks on all Staff

* Gloves and Facial Coverings (Masks) for all Staff when working with Clients

* Cleaning of all common surfaces and/or equipment in between Clients

* Following local public health guidelines regarding group sizes

* Appropriate physical distancing

* Options for telephonic results counseling as well as in-person consultation

* Robust Health Coaching program for those interested and/or who qualify (additional fees apply)
