Swimming is an excellent aerobic activity that works your entire body and cardiovascular system – an hour of swimming burns almost as many calories as running without all the impact on your bones and joints. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), swimming is the fourth most popular sports activity in the United States.

  • It improves sleep. In one study on older adults with insomnia, participants reported a boost in quality of life and sleep after engaging in regular aerobic exercise, such as swimming.
  • It can help you live longer. Regular exercise, swimming included, may increase longevity. According to a 2017 report, swimming had a 28% lower risk of early death and a 41% lower risk of death due to heart disease and stroke than those who don’t swim.
