Combat Dry, Flaky Skin This Winter

Winter is in full swing, which typically means colder air and a lack of humidity. As a result, our skin suffers – it becomes dry, flaky, and itchy. Observed every year on January 8th, National Winter Skin Relief Day encourages us to take care of our skin during the drier winter months. Here are a few helpful tips to fight back and keep your skin smooth and hydrated all winter long.

  • Use Moisturizer – Washing your skin is important, but the downside is that washing tends to strip our skin of its natural oils. After showing, bathing, or washing your face, don’t forget to use a moisturizer to replenish your skin’s moisture and hydration.
  • Apply Sunscreen – Although sunscreen isn’t the first thing to come to mind as a winter must-have, it’s important to note that our skin is still vulnerable to the sun’s UV light – even during the colder months. Applying a layer of sunscreen to your skin after moisturizing every morning will provide additional protection to your skin for the day.
  • Use Overnight Treatments – Overnight treatments such as emollients can work wonders for dry skin. Though an emollient tends to be a heavier type of cream, applying it before you sleep will give your skin plenty of time to absorb it.
  • Try a Humidifier – Indoor heating during the winter keeps us warm and cozy, but it also zaps the moisture and humidity from the air – leading to dry skin. A humidifier works to add moisture back into the air and your skin.
  • Drink More Water – Hydrating from the outside isn’t the only way to combat dry skin. Be mindful to drink water regularly and eat foods that are high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
