Healthier, Hoppier Easter

Easter is a day of celebration, which for many includes indulging in brunch, followed by a feast of chocolate eggs and colorful jellybeans throughout the date, and a sit-down dinner with your favorite ham-and-casserole combo at dinner. While it is easy to go overboard on the Easter feast, it’s all about striking a healthy balance while still enjoying some of this spring’s favorite traditions.

  • Eat a real breakfast of champions: Eat a healthy, hearty breakfast, maybe including some real eggs, and don’t skip meals and snacks during the day. Eating fiber and protein-fueled meals during the day will help stabilize your blood sugar levels, help you feel your best all day long, and prevent you from overeating at dinner.
  • Enjoy bread and candy last: After you’ve filled up on veggies and protein, then enjoy the bread and butter, peeps, jellybeans, or chocolate-covered caramels. While it’s tempting to inhale five or six candies in one sitting, slow down and savory each bite. Also, be on the lookout for your favorites in sampler sizes that won’t tempt you to overindulge.
  • Redefine Easter treats: If you assemble Easter baskets for your kiddos, include some non-candy treats – think colorful jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, coloring books with crayons, hula hoops, and books.
  • Turn up the heat with your Easter festivities: Turn your traditional Easter egg hunt into a series of short races and games that kick up those heart rates. Stuff some of the eggs with small pieces of paper that require everyone to do an activity, such as a lap around the house or 10 “bunny hops” before hunting for the next egg.
