Improve Your Posture

Good posture helps our body move efficiently without putting it under unneeded stress and strain that can lead to injury. Additionally, it makes you look and feel more confident and helps you breathe and digest easier because the proper alignment of the body allows the organs to function as needed. From working at a desk all day to looking down at our phone screens, it’s easy to fall into the habit of slouching. Unfortunately, poor posture not only leads to back pain but is also a contributing factor to a wide range of health issues – such as constipation, heartburn, and breathing problems.

Here are some helpful suggestions to help achieve a proper posture:

– Standing: Stand tall and straight, like you’re measuring your height against a wall. Make sure that your ears are right over the middle of your shoulders and your shoulders back, and don’t let your bottom or hips stick out.

– Sitting: Scoot all the way to the back of the chair with your knees bent at a right angle and your feet flat on the floor. It can help to put a small rolled-up towel or lumbar cushion behind your mid-back.

– Sleeping: Opt for a firm mattress that maintains your spine’s natural shape. If you’re a back sleeper, use a small pillow versus a thick one. If you’re a side sleeper, use a pillow to keep your head level with your spine, and don’t hug your knees in (having them slightly bent is fine).
