Winter Activities for the Family

Winter is upon us – the days are shorter, and the air is colder. And while winter is the prime time to snuggle up on the couch with a fuzzy blanket, don’t forget to get up, get out, and move your body. With a little planning and creativity, you can help your family stay physically active all year long – no matter what the weather is outside.

Outdoor Winter Activities  – Just because it’s cold out does not mean you have to stay inside. Grab your jacket, boots, gloves, and scarf, and enjoy some fresh air when you can.

  • Go for a walk or job.
  • In the snow? Make a snowman or snow fort! Lie in the snow and make snow angels. Have a snowball fight, or find a bunny hill and go sledding.
  • Chase bubbles (if it’s cold enough, they will freeze!)
  • Try a winter sport – skiing, skating, snowshoeing, snowboarding
  • Go to a playground – Play tag, kick a soccer ball around, shoot some baskets

Around the House – Too wet outside? Clear some space in your home for in-house play!

  • Put on music and have a dance party.
  • Play games that require movement  (Click this link for some fun examples –https://www.chop.edu/news/health-tip/tips-making-exercise-fun-kids)
  • Make a “Move Jar” – Fill a jar with slips of paper with words, phrases, or drawings that call for movement. I.e., Walking like a bear or moving like a monster.
  • Set up an obstacle course with cushions and pillows.
  • Use tape to make a hopscotch pattern on the floor.

Community Play Spaces & Sports Facilities

  • Find out if there are any indoor play spaces in your community.
  • Check your local recreation center for classes and activities.
  • Go ice skating or roller skating
  • Take a long walk at the local mall

No matter what the weather, these three guidelines can make it easier to keep your kids active all year long.

                -Keep it positive and fun

                -Stick to a routine

-It’s OK to break it up
