Staying Active During Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the #1 holiday that Americans consume the most calories. Not only does it kick off the holiday binge, but it also brings excess stress that can lead to depression. How can we maintain our mental and physical health this holiday season? Exercise!

Exercise boosts our energy levels and can reduce the stress and anxiety that often coincide with the upcoming holiday season. Here are some quick tips to help you stay active during Thanksgiving.

  • Plan Ahead: Planning out your fitness routine ahead of time and putting these workouts on your calendar is key to accountability for yourself. Don’t stress if you miss one day; be kind to yourself and just try your best.
  • Be Creative with 10 – 20 Minute Bursts: Regardless of planning, you will likely not have as much time for your workouts. Walking, jogging, and running are always doable for short bursts, as are bodyweight circuits for strength training. Even just 10–20-minute bursts of exercise throughout the day can be beneficial. Try doing a HITT routine before dinner or even a few laps around the block after dinner.
  • Everything in Moderation: Indulging in just a few days during each holiday is key. Don’t let it turn into weeks or months. Be mindful of what you are eating and consciously enjoy every bit.
  • Make it a Family Affair: Go for a walk, bike ride, or organize a soccer or flag football game. Playing with young children and chasing them around the house can even get your heart rate going. Throw in some planks while playing on the floor, and you will get some full-body conditioning.
